위키 피디아에서 Johns Hopkins를 찾아보면 노벨 물리학 상 수상자를 3명 배출했다고 한다. 물론 노벨 의학상은 16명. -_-;

얼핏보면 간단할것같은 족구에 여러가지 서브를 조미료처럼 첨가하자 거품물고 달려들어 너도나도 장래희망 족구선수.<br Links between i and j are formed when i and j collide, i.e. intersect (each node has an circular area of radius r). This model is quite simple: there are just two parameters - density and collision rate. With this simple model, authors could produce macro-characteristics of real networks (degree distribution, clustering coefficient, and average shortest path length). How can it be possible? Like many articles, this article does not say something about the intuitional reason under this phenomena.

Also in another article "Universal behavior of load distribution in scale-free networks. K.-I. Goh, B. Kahng and D. Kim. Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 278701 (2001)", I was sad that authors could not provide any satisfying explanations on the universality of load distribution. Maybe it's because of the complexity of network structures.

When can we explain successfully macrophenomena emerged through network structures intuitively?

An interesting open problem in mathematics

http://garden.irmacs.sfu.ca/ is a good portal site for open problems in mathematics.

Here is Rosa's Graceful Tree Conjecture.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(57, 57, 57); These restricted classes include paths, stars, complete bipartite graphs, prism graphs, wheel graphs, caterpillar graphs, olive trees, and symmetrical trees.

You can try to make a 'ungraceful tree', but you may fail. :)

Plexus Institute

http://www.plexusinstitute.org/

We live in two worlds, one created by nature, the other built by humans. In the first, nature displays its infinite ability to create organization at all levels, from crystals to plants to living organisms, and its amazing capacity to innovate and adapt, demonstrated through the 3.5 billion years of its history. In the human world, many organizations and systems we have created - such as in healthcare, education, business and government - feel rigid, inefficient, and incapable of delivering what we want. Inside those organizations, whether private or public, many people at all levels remain dissatisfied with their working environment, and contribute well below their potential. The standard solutions treat only the symptoms of the problem: change the boss, spend more money, introduce a new program, reorganize.

What a wonderful story!

Developing graph analysis programs in python.

I needed nothing but the following libraries to make graph analysis programs (from file to file) in python.

1. I have to complete the application to Purdue, but since I will participate in 2009 KIAS-SNU physics winter camp , I will complete it after the end of the camp.

Now, what am I supposed to do? GRE General!

This is 11:40 pm, 12/9/2008. At Hilton Osaka, I am writing a sort of diary. Na Young is sleeping in side of me.

At last, in 3:30 pm today, I had finished GRE General Test. Fortunately I got the stable scores on both of Verbal and Quantitative.

First, I thank to God and my wife. My wife, Na Young, had to sacrifice so many things (leisure in holiday, time with her families and friends, happy supper with me...) to support my study for GRE. Also, I thank the sincere help of my parents and my parents in law. For two whole months when I have poured all of my energy into the study for GRE, they had always understood my remiss to themselves. (For two months, I have done almost nothing but preparing GRE Verbal and Writing.)

Before taking the exam, I almost felt fearful about the possible bad result of the test since it is known to be crucial when deciding how much financial support would be offered by the graduate admission committee in the university that I'll apply. (In fact, I had registered GRE General PBT Test scheduled in 25/10/2008 preparing the case in which CBT score would be bad. I canceled it very after finishing CBT although it refunded only half of original prices $195.) Even during the Verbal test, since I came to notice that the test set had been changed, I knew I could not rely on the Hoogi. So, I was worried about my Verbal score. Now, I relieved. Although writing score is not available, I expect that it will be not one among the worst scores.

Then, the only remaining test for applying is GRE Subject Test (Physics) which I will take on 18/10/2008. I will make me ready for this test since next Monday. This weekend should be used for my families. In addition, I should start writing SOP (statement of purpose).

Finishing (or graduating from as it is said wittily by Korean GRE General Test Takers) GRE General Test means a lot to me. Since almost friends taking the Test before I take said "GRE Verbal Test would be hardest among many required events for application."

In my opinion, GRE Verbal problems seem very good to learn English. It helps us not only to learn untold English words, but to understand the logical structure hidden in the relation between words and in English sentence. During the GRE Verbal study, I had come to know that the relation between words and the sentence structure of English is so logical that it can be compared to the programming language.

Anyhow, I graduated from the GRE General Test. Good Bye! The hell of English enigma!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://evolangel.blogspot.com/2008/09/good-bye-gre-general.html' title='Good Bye! Oh my godness! It's too early. I'm not an early bird. :-(

I could find many interesting research topics in this course.

1. Para/Dia/Ferro/Ferri/Antiferro maganetism

It brings me some concise equations expressing the nature of those phenomena.
I hate complex equations those aren't able to be derived in at most 10 steps.

The standard models in these subject such as Ising model, Heisenberg Hamiltonian and tools like the mean field theory have been applied to the complex network theory successfully.

2. Superconductivity

I like this topics, but this was lectured by T.A. because the professor had to attend on the conferences abroad. However, that T.A. was not good at teaching. I couldn't help studying by myself on these topics, and then the result is not satisfactory.

However, this topic includes the research topics not explained yet, which can be a way to go. Also this is the representative critical phenomena having phase transition.

Because this course is an undergraduate solid state physics course, many topics have been treated and cannot be studied extensively about each topic. Sadly, I have to cram all the minor ideas and equations into my head for the exam.

To Study in America, and F2

I like studying natural sciences, such as physics, mathematics. Among many subjects, mathematical and intuitively understandable topics are favorite. So, I am supposed to study in America where many talented students & faculties work in those kind of fields by applying this year.

However, it's not easy at all to be admitted in famous universities. So many things should I do and accomplish. Here are some of them.

1. High GPA (> 4.0 in 4.3 scale)
2. Some reserach experiences and results from those.
3. Enlish proficiency, iBT TOEFL > 100, GRE verbal > 600
4. At least 3 references from the researchers in the field which I'm interested in.

These are the minimum. To succeed in these criteria, I should give up other things, especially hanging around with friends. Especially, I cannot afford my time playing with my wife, F2, enough. I'm very sorry about that. If I succeed in the field I'm studying, my wife deserves to own about 75.6% of that success. :)

I hope that I can post about the admission from the famous universities in February next year.

Someone's Theory Of Everything

http://www.munnaontherun.com/2008/05/theory-of-everything.html

Someone published an interesting drawing about the history of physics. Hierarchical Structure And The Prediction Of Missing Links In
Networks , Nature

Excerpts: Networks have in recent years emerged
as an invaluable tool for describing and quantifying complex systems in many
branches of science.
(...) We further show that knowledge of hierarchical
structure can be used to predict missing connections in partly known networks
with high accuracy, and for more general network structures than competing
techniques. Taken together, our results suggest that hierarchy is a central
organizing principle of complex networks, capable of offering insight into many
network phenomena.

* [10] Hierarchical Structure And The Prediction
Of Missing Links In Networks, Aaron Clauset, Cristopher Moore, M. E. J. Newman,
08/05/01, DOI:
10.1038/nature06830, Nature 453, 98-101

[10] http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v453/n7191/full/nature06830.html

Because the idea looks so simple, I even wonder why this work is published in Nature. :) The author fits the "Hierarchical Random Graph Model (HRG)" to the observed network using MCMC method. HRG is described by the dendorgram, which is mainly used for the visualization of hierarchical clustering result in multivariate statistics.

In fact, the algorithm to decompose the network into nested cohesive blocks was also suggested before. The most well-known algorithm in social network community is the algorithm using k-component of James Moddy and Douglas R. White, which is stated in "James Moody, Douglas R. White. 5/9/2001. Structural Cohesion and Embeddedness: A hierarchical conception of social groups.Embeddedness".

However, like the other works done by Clauset, this approach is very intuitive and well-modeled statistically. I hope that this work may be ueful for my ongoing research, bernoulli random triad graph.

[Tips] Hide console window when you want to run a batch job (in MS windows)

You may run regular jobs in MS windows by using scheulded jobs.
